The Best UMSL Free Scholarships

With that in mind I've written up the best scholarships UMSL have to offer. An Academic Scholarship is worth $2,000 dollars a year as is the Accounting Alumni Scholarship, Alyn and Marilyn Essman Study Abroad Scholarship, Anita Palmer Corbin Scholarship, David R. Ganz Accounting Scholarship and English Speaking Union Scholarship.

Free Scholarships Worth $7,000

The Biggest Scholarships

To highlight some of the biggest scholarships the Curators Scholarship is worth $7,000 per year and is for Missouri residents who whilst at high school where in the top 5% of their high school class and achieved a score of 28 or above in the ACT American College Testing or SAT Scholastic Aptitude Test with a combined score of at least 1250, you must enrol fulltime at the University of Missouri St. Louis, the award can be renewed for up to two years meaning you will have received $14,000 total from the award. The scholarship is classed as a Freshmen Merit Award as it is for new entrants to the university.

The Chancellor's Scholarship

The Chancellor's Scholarship is worth $5,000 per year and is a similar type of award to the Curators Scholarship in that it is for new university entrants (Freshmen) it is an easier award to get as instead of appearing in the top 5% of your high school class you only need be in the top 10% and your need to score 26 or above in your ACT or 1170 in your combined SAT score. Again like the Curators scholarship the Chancellors scholarship is renewable for two years so you will receive $10,000 from the award.

John Denver Memorial Scholarship in Tropical Ecology

The John Denver Memorial Scholarship in Tropical Ecology is worth $3,000 per year but is only for students who have an association with the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Centre, it's a non renewable award so it cannot be extended for multiple years and is a one off payment, the Harris World Ecology Centre (HWEC) promotes research and training in biodiversity issues that effect the whole world and involve themselves in resource awareness and conservation, the award is known as the John Denver award after it was first presented to the musician and actor John Denver.

Missouri Academic Scholarship (Bright Flight)

Also offering $3,000 per year is the Missouri Academic Scholarship (Bright Flight) this award is for Freshmen entering university for the first time and like the Curators and Chancellors scholarship awards academic excellence at high school, but rather than being in the top 5% (Curators scholarship) or top 10% (Chancellors scholarship) the Academic or Bright Flight scholarship requires that the student was in the top 3% not of the class like the other two awards but of the state for their ACT or SAT admissions tests. Additionally students must maintain a 2.5 Grade Point Average GPA, the award is also renewable for every year of academic study.

Missouri Minority Teacher Education Scholarship

Also worth $3,000 a year is the Missouri Minority Teacher Education Scholarship this scholarship is for residents of Missouri who are designated minority students due to their ethnicity (black African, black American, American Indian, Asian, Pacific Islands), students will need to be in the top 25% of their high school class and get 75% or higher in their ACT or SAT tests, this award is only available for students undertaking teacher training on a four year course of study. The award is renewable for up to three years so you will receive $9,000 in total.

Phi Theta Kappa All-Missouri Academic Team Student Scholarship

The Phi Theta Kappa All-Missouri Academic Team Student Scholarship is worth $5,000 per year and the student must be on the Phi Theta Kappa All-Missouri academic staff list (you must teach at the university and be a member of Phi Theta Kappa at any Missouri based university or college, the student must have an associate's degree including 42 hours of general education study on the CBHE College Based Higher Education course, to receive the award students must be full time at UMSL and must remain in good standing with the university which usually means that the student must not owe any money to the university for course fees or accommodation.

The student must also maintain a 3.25 GPA whilst they continue their studies at the University of Missouri. The award can be renewed for up to two years so the student will receive a total of $10,000 from the award.

Presser Scholarship

The Presser Scholarship for music is worth $3,000 per year and is awarded to a junior music major studying at the University of Missouri, the award is given to junior music majors who have shown leadership in the universities music department and academic excellence. The award is for $3,000 only and is not renewable.

International And Study Abroad Student Scholarships

There are several awards for international and study abroad students and these include the Alyn and Marilyn Essman Study Abroad Scholarship which is for $2,000 per year, the award is for students studying at the University of Missouri who are members of the university's student exchange programme or study abroad programme, the award will help towards the expenses of studying abroad.

The award is merit based but is also awarded for those in financial need so it's not all about your grades your financial status can also win you this award. The award is given both for undergraduates studying a first degree like a bachelor's degree as well as graduate students studying for a second degree like a masters or doctoral degree. Whilst $2,000 is awarded each year there is no renewal programme however students are able to reapply for additional years if they still qualify (are still on the study abroad or student exchange programme).

Blanche M. Touhill International Study Scholarship

Another international student scholarship is the Blanche M. Touhill International Study Scholarship this scholarship is again for students on the study abroad or student exchange programme, however only studying abroad in specific countries qualifies for this award those countries are China, Taiwan and Hong Kong although students in other Asian countries will also be considered.

The award is given based jointly on academic excellence (academic merit) and the students financial need, students with good grades or students from a poor background or a mix of good grades and low income will get you this award (providing you meet the country requirements). The award is not for a fixed amount of money but based on the students needs, when you apply for the scholarship you state how much money you need for living expenses, course fees and other expenses and the awarding body (the university) will decide on the amount of money to award the student. This scholarship is also renewable for multiple years of study at the University of Missouri at St. Louis or the partner universities in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

English Speaking Union Scholarship

The English Speaking Union Scholarship awards $2,000 per year for students who live in (are resident in) the metropolitan area of St. Louis, the student will need to be enrolled on a study aboard or student exchange programme at the University of Missouri at St. Louis and plan to study at an English speaking partner university so this could be in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong or Singapore or Chinese universities where the language of instruction is English.

The scholarship is available for both undergraduate (first degree) and graduate (second degree) courses of study. Whilst the award amount is $2,000 the award is not renewable and you must reapply each year if you are still a qualifying student (on the student exchange or study abroad programme).

Hellenic Government Karakas Family Scholarship Program

Other international focussed scholarships include the Hellenic Government Karakas Family Scholarship Program this award is for $500 and cannot be renewed each year the student must reapply, to qualify for the award students will need to be studying Greek and have a minimum 2.75 GPA.

International Business Scholarship

The International Business Scholarship is for students studying international business at the undergraduate level, students must be in full time study and have previously applied for a FAFSA Free Application For Student Aid, this state based grant will, show if the student is deserving of this award (from a low income family or unable to obtain a state funded grant for another reason).

The award amount varies case by case so if you are in desperate need of financial aid you're more likely to get a larger scholarship than someone whose family are better off. The award is not renewable but you can reapply each year.

International Studies Scholarship

There is also a variation of this award called the International Studies Scholarship for students studying international studies and who are in the top 5% of their class and score 28 or above on the ACT or 1170 on the SAT tests, however you don't have to have these grade scores to be considered, students who can show a commitment to international studies from prior work in the area whilst at high school for example can also apply. The award is renewable for each year of study.

Joel Glassman and Katherine Cochrane Study Abroad Scholarship

The Joel Glassman and Katherine Cochrane Study Abroad Scholarship is for $1,000 and is awarded by the UMSL Centre for International Studies, again students must be accepted onto the university's student exchange or study abroad programmes, the award is merit based so the students applying with the highest grades will get the scholarship however financial need may also be considered, meaning that students may not have the highest grades but if they have the greatest financial need they may well have a better case then the highest grade student from a wealthy household. The award is not renewable and students must reapply to continue to receive the award for future years of study (assuming the student is still studying abroad or on an exchange programme).

Koumparakis Moss Endowed Scholarship in Hellenic Studies

The Koumparakis Moss Endowed Scholarship in Hellenic Studies is awarded by the University of Missouri Centre for International Studies, students must be full time students who as part of their studies are studying for the Certificate in Greek Studies from the College of Arts and Sciences both junior and senior students are eligible for the award however a cumulative high school 3.5 GPA is required and the first language of the student must be English, this is to widen participation as a Greek student would obviously have an unfair advantage if able to apply for this scholarship.

The amount of the scholarship varies according to the financial needs of the students so poorer students would be able to receive more money than a similar student from a more wealthy household.

The award is made each year and cannot be renewed however eligible students (those still studying for the Certificate in Greek Studies) are able to reapply each year.
